November 2016
Richard Prior/LaGrange Symphony Orchestra
This year is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s passing and we commemorate the immortal bard by presenting a program of works that evoke the fire of human passion and love. We open with Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March (“pomp and circumstance” being derived from a line in Act III of Othello). Then follows two musical incarnations of Romeo and Juliet: Tchaikovsky’s fantasy-overture of the same name and then the electrifying Symphonic Dances from West Side Story – Romeo and Juliet as imagined in the music of Leonard Bernstein. We are joined by guest actors from LaGrange College enacting scenes from Shakespeare’s play and Stephen Sondheim’s libretto for West Side Story.

Jazz and classical saxophone royalty, three time Grammy® winner Branford Marsalis delivers sophisticated style to the lush Bach and folk-influenced Bachianas of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Brazil’s finest composer. Ravel’s pulsating, exotic Boléro plus two snappy Latin American-inspired works by Hollywood legends Gershwin and Bernstein, ensure the evening’s hot Latin pizzazz!
