Works of Barber, Golijov, Tchaikovsky, and Bernstein form a more powerful, wordless response to the latter composer's now-ubiquitous quote, "This shall be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." Ms. Blumenthal will perform Bernstein's powerful "Halil," composed in honor of a young Israeli flutist Yadin Tanenbaum who was killed at the Suez Canal during the 1973 Yom Kippur war.
Kansas City Symphony/Michael Stern
Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra/Stuart Malina
Virginia Symphony Orchestra/JoAnn Falletta, conductor/Virginia Chorale
Presented by the Virginia Arts Festival, the audience is taken on a breathtaking ride through the joyful celebration of the Chichester Psalms, the darkly intricate beauty of the Serenade, featuring Grammy-nominated violinist Robert McDuffie, the transporting Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and the knife-edge jazz of Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, written for Benny Goodman and performed here by award-winning clarinetist Jon Manasse, with Todd Rosenlieb Dance performing Rosenlieb’s original choreography. Bernstein’s daughter Jamie will host this spectacular celebration and speak of her father’s legacy.
