Our Bernstein centennial celebration continues with a curtain-raiser tribute to his friend, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and Bernstein’s expressive showpiece for violin and orchestra, composed in praise of love. Mahler’s most popular symphony offers a disarming directness and charm, a journey that ends in a glow of serenity and peace

Works of Barber, Golijov, Tchaikovsky, and Bernstein form a more powerful, wordless response to the latter composer's now-ubiquitous quote, "This shall be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." Ms. Blumenthal will perform Bernstein's powerful "Halil," composed in honor of a young Israeli flutist Yadin Tanenbaum who was killed at the Suez Canal during the 1973 Yom Kippur war.
