April 2018
aFresno Master Chorale and Coro Piccolo present their spring concert that includes works by Bernstein, and expands on the “birthday” theme with works of additional composers. Anna Hamre, Artistic Director for Fresno Community Chorus, conducts.
Philharmonia Northwest's final concert commemorates the 100th birthday of legendary American composer, conductor, and pianist Leonard Bernstein. His multi-faceted life is reflected in the programming: ragtime rhythms from the musical On the Town, the prayerful Halil for flute and chamber orchestra, and the dramatic Mass, which includes traditional Latin texts as well as English texts written by Bernstein himself, Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz, and Paul Simon.
This season, the NCC remembers the immortal words of Emma Lazarus, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” At Prism, we celebrate diversity—the very fabric of our American identity. Here, being different is not only ok, but cherished; and loving each other for our differences is one of our core values. Musical selections this evening at Carnegie Hall will chant the praises of diversity from across the globe, including a special tribute to Leonard Bernstein as part of Bernstein at 100, the worldwide centennial festival, in a jubilant season finale.
