Works Piano(s) Touches (1981)

Overview

Commissioned as a required piece for all contestants in the Sixth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Touches begins with a chorale, similar to a short work Bernstein wrote for his daughter Jamie's twenty-sixth birthday entitled Virgo Blues, and cycles through a set of eight variations which ends with a coda. The form and spirit of the work are remniscient of Copland's Piano Variations (1930), a work Bernstein held dear to his heart throughout his life.
