From the Archives: MASS Revisited by James Carroll
In the late 1960's Jacqueline Kennedy asked Leonard Bernstein to compose a mass in honor of her slain husband to be performed at the dedication of Washington's Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The result was Bernstein's "MASS: A Theater Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers," an extraordinary composition [written in collaboration with Stephen Schwartz] that combined the production values of opera, choral magnificence, the hip choreography of Broadway, intricate symphonic harmonies - and a heartbreaking narrative turning on the figure of an all-too-human young priest. I was such a priest when I attended a performance of MASS in its opening run in 1971, and it left me shaken.

West Side Story to open TCM's Classic Film Festival with 60th Anniversary cast reunion
Rita Moreno is reuniting with her West Side Story costars George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn on the 60th anniversary of the screen classic. The trio will get together virtually on the opening night of the 2021 TCM Film Festival on Thursday, May 6 where they will discuss the making of the 1961 film.

From the Archive: Bernstein Meets Broadway
Carol Oja’s Bernstein Meets Broadway: Collaborative Art in a Time of War has recently been released by Oxford University Press. Oja chronicles the earliest professional adventures of Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Jerome Robbins by zeroing in on Fancy Free and On the Town from 1944. She also explores the work of The Revuers, Comden and Green’s early sketch comedy team, for which Bernstein was an occasional pianist. A central theme in her book focuses on the racial desegration of Broadway musicals. Following are a few excerpts.
